One of our recent patients, Matthew, presented with several challenging dental issues, including damaged teeth that had undergone previous root canal treatments, large fillings, and cracks in some of them. Root Canal Treatments and Cracked Teeth
Matthew’s treatment began with addressing the teeth that had previously undergone root canal treatments. Root canal therapy is a procedure performed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected by removing the damaged pulp inside the tooth and sealing it. However, some of Matthew’s treated teeth were also cracked, which weakened their structure and left them vulnerable to further damage.
To restore the integrity of these teeth, we applied fiber post applications. Fiber posts are used in cases where a tooth has undergone root canal treatment but lacks sufficient strength to support a crown. The fiber post is placed inside the tooth, providing additional stability and support.
Dental Implants for Missing Teeth
In addition to the teeth that had undergone root canal treatment, Matthew also had missing teeth. To restore both the function and aesthetics of his smile, we placed dental implants. Dental implants are titanium posts inserted into the jawbone, serving as a permanent replacement for missing teeth. Once the implant fuses with the bone (a process known as osseointegration), a crown or other prosthetic can be attached to restore the appearance and function of the tooth.
Endo-Perio Lesion Treatment
One of Matthew’s teeth had an endo-perio lesion, a condition where infection affects both the root (endo) and the surrounding gum (perio). This type of infection can be tricky to treat, as it involves both the tooth and the supporting bone and tissue. We treated this tooth with curettage, a procedure to clean the infected tissue, followed by a root canal treatment to eliminate the infection within the tooth.
Zirconium Crowns for Strength and Aesthetics
After addressing all the underlying issues, we completed Matthew’s treatment with 28 zirconium crowns. Zirconium crowns are a popular choice for dental restorations due to their durability and aesthetic qualities. They are made from a strong, tooth-colored material that mimics the appearance of natural teeth while providing long-lasting protection. These crowns not only restored the function of Matthew’s teeth but also enhanced the overall aesthetics of his smile, giving him a more youthful and confident look.
