Bruksizm and Vertical Dimension – Martin’s Journey!

Our patient Martin came to Diamond Dental Antalya with concerns about his old crowns breaking and his natural teeth wearing down. After a thorough evaluation, we diagnosed Martin with bruxism.

This condition had caused significant wear, fractures, and cracks in his teeth, as well as a reduction in his vertical dimension. Additionally, bruxism had damaged his Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ).

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary excessive grinding or clenching of the teeth. It is often related to stress and anxiety, but can also occur during sleep.

This condition can lead to various dental issues such as tooth wear, cracks, and fractures, and can even cause a reduction in the vertical dimension of the teeth.

Temporo-Mandibular Joint Rehabilitation

The Temporo-Mandibular joint is a critical structure that facilitates jaw movement. Bruxism can damage this joint, causing pain and dysfunction. We provided Martin with comprehensive TMJ rehabilitation to address these issues and improve jaw function.

What is Vertical Dimension?

Vertical dimension refers to the distance between the upper and lower jaws. This distance is crucial for proper chewing function and aesthetic appearance. Conditions like bruxism can reduce this distance, negatively impacting the jaw joint and overall oral health.

First Session: Sinus Lift and Implant Placement

During his initial examination, we found that Martin’s front teeth with postcore were broken at the root level, necessitating extraction. Due to insufficient bone in his upper jaw and sagging sinuses, we performed a bilateral open sinus lift and used 4cc of human-derived bone graft.

In the same session, we placed 8 Straumann implants and provided Martin with temporary teeth. After this process, Martin returned to the UK.

Second Session: Digital Impressions and Zirconium Crowns

Five months later, Martin returned to our clinic. We took digital impressions with an intraoral scanner and created 28 zirconium crowns, customized to his chosen shade and shape.

This process gave Martin a perfect smile, both aesthetically and functionally.

Today, Martin continues his life with a much brighter and more confident smile.
